The R/V Sikuliaq, pronounced [see-KOO-lee-auk], is a 261-foot oceanographic research ship capable of bringing scientists to the ice-choked waters of Alaska and the polar regions. We are currently accepting applications for temporary relief Marine Electricians to fill hitches from June 3rd, 2023 – August 4th, 2023 & October 8th, 2023 – November 15th, 2023.
Duties:
| KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: | Strong skills as a marine electrician, especially in the areas of troubleshooting, new installations, and upkeep of existing equipment. The electrician must also have the ability to read blueprints of electrical/electronic equipment on board with the ability to make changes as required. The electrician must have experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and electronic controls, knowledge of variable frequency drives, and knowledge of electrical safe practices. This position requires strong interpersonal and communication skills with diverse personnel. |

| TYPICAL EXPERIENCE: |
The successful applicant should have 1.5 years of experience working with shipboard electrical systems, and an understanding of and experience with VOM, megger, and amp meters. The successful applicant will also possess an understanding of shipboard operations, the ability to operate machines and hand tools safely, and math and computer skills.

| REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING: | Qualified applicants must possess the following valid credentials U.S. Passport TWIC Card USCG Medical Certificate U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC) with the following endorsements: Qualified Member Engine Department (QMED)- Electrician, Able Seafarer Engine, and Basic Training. Note: Third Assistant Engineers are strongly preferred This position requires at-sea experience and familiarity with oceanographic research ship operations in support of ocean research, with a primary emphasis in high latitudes. |
| SALARY INFORMATION: | This is a temporary position, grade 76, step placement DOE. Pay also includes cruise leave cash out upon completion of contract. Sailing bonuses available. |

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until a successful candidate is identified. Review of application materials will begin immediately. Search and selection procedures will be closed when a sufficient and viable number of qualified candidates have been identified Applicants will be required to provide documentation of participation in a random drug testing program for at least 60 of the preceding 185 days, did not have any positive test results, and did not refuse to take a required test. If not under employment, where a random drug testing program exists, the applicant shall provide a completed test indicating they are free of illegal substance abuse, when requested by Seward Marine Center, prior to employment. Testing will be for the presence of cocaine, opiates, marijuana (THC), amphetamines and PCP (phencyclidine). Testing will be in accordance with the Department of Transportation Program and testing shall be in accordance with United States Coast Guard Drug and Alcohol Testing guidelines outlined in the Federal Register 46 C.F.R. 4, 5, and 16. |
