When Erika Shanley earned her Unlimited Radar Endorsement earlier this summer, she celebrated more than a certification. It was proof of years of grit, balancing 28-day hitches, studying late into the night, and showing her three kids what resilience really looks like.
Today, Erika is a steersman with Central Boat Rentals, Inc., working toward her dream of becoming a pilot. But her path to the wheelhouse began far from the waterways, inside refineries where she spent over a decade learning to thrive in demanding, male-dominated environments.

“I started as a hydroblaster and worked my way up to supervisor,” Erika shared. “Eventually, I was ready for a new challenge, a career that would push me both mentally and physically.” Inspired by her father’s maritime career, she decided to follow in his footsteps. Her background in refineries gave her the discipline, attention to detail, and ability to manage high-pressure situations that translated naturally to life on the water.

Now serving as a steersman, Erika’s days begin early, checking fuel and hour readings, reviewing logs, and making sure the boat and barges are ready for the day’s work. She spends her hitch learning hands-on, running tow, locking, and making and breaking tow, all while soaking up guidance from seasoned captains. “What keeps me pushing forward is knowing I’m building a future not just for myself, but for my family,” she said. “I’m motivated by the progress I’ve already made, the people who believe in me, and the chance to prove that hard work and grit still matter in this industry.”
Earning her Unlimited Radar Endorsement was a milestone that required focus and sacrifice. Erika credits her success to determination and an unusual study group. “One of the most meaningful parts was doing it alongside my 11-year-old twin boys,” she recalled. “It gave me a chance to show them that learning never stops, that you should always push yourself to grow no matter how busy life gets.”
Navigating male-dominated spaces is nothing new for Erika, but she admits the challenges are real. “There have been times I was overlooked, doubted, or tested just to see if I could handle the pressure. And I did,” she said. “I may not always walk into welcoming environments, but I make sure when I leave, I’ve earned my place.” Her approach is grounded in action, working hard, staying focused, and leaning on her greatest support system, her wife Diana, and their three children, Haleigh, Ethan, and Derik.
Looking ahead, Erika is focused on building wheel time, earning her Mate of Towing license, and completing her pilot training. But beyond the certifications, she’s focused on leadership, learning how to run a crew with calm, confidence, and integrity. “It’s not just about holding the title,” she said. “It’s about being the kind of pilot others can trust and look up to.”
To women considering maritime careers, or anyone thinking about a bold career shift, Erika’s advice is simple but powerful:
“You don’t have to fit the mold to belong, you just have to show up, work hard, and believe that you deserve a seat at the table. You don’t have to be fearless, you just have to keep going.”
Erika’s journey is exactly what Women Offshore celebrates. Every hitch, every certification, and every challenge overcome brings us closer to the futures we are building, and her story is proof that resilience can chart a course to anywhere you dream of going.
