Christy Nandlal has spent nearly two decades working across the world’s oceans supporting complex geophysical operations. As a Chief Field Geophysicist, her career has taken her from the Gulf of Mexico to the North Sea, contributing to marine seismic exploration and geotechnical campaigns that support the oil, gas, and wind farm industries.

Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Nandlal began her journey in the maritime and energy sectors at a young age. She graduated from the University of Trinidad and Tobago with a technician’s diploma in Petroleum Engineering Technology and entered the industry at just twenty years old as an Observer, also known as an Acquisition Specialist, with WesternGeco. From the beginning, she was drawn to the technical challenges and global nature of marine geophysical work.

Her early dedication quickly set her apart. Within three years, she advanced to the role of Senior Field Geophysicist after completing WesternGeco’s seismic school and extensive technical training programs. By the age of twenty seven, she had become the youngest Chief Field Geophysicist in the WesternGeco fleet, an achievement that reflected both her technical expertise and her determination to grow within the field.

Over the course of her career, Nandlal has worked with several major marine seismic service companies including WesternGeco, Fairfield Geotechnologies, Polarcus, and Fugro, both as a direct employee and as a freelancer. Her experience also extends to marine geotechnical and survey organizations such as MMT, Ocean Infinity, NextGeoSolutions, GEOxyz, and Geoquip Marine Services. These roles have allowed her to support a wide range of offshore operations, from seismic data acquisition to geotechnical investigations that help guide offshore energy development.

Her work has taken her across some of the most active offshore basins in the world. She has contributed to operations in the Campos Basin in Brazil, Sarawak in Malaysia, the west coast of Australia, the Kara Sea in Russia, Campeche in Mexico, and throughout the North Sea across the United Kingdom, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium. Each project has required careful coordination, technical precision, and strong collaboration among international teams working in demanding offshore environments.

Alongside her operational work, Nandlal remains deeply engaged in professional and academic communities within the geosciences and maritime industries. She is affiliated with the Society of Exploration Geophysicists and its regional organization LARAC, where she contributes to HSSE committees focused on survey design, marine seismic data acquisition, onboard data processing, and maritime industry safety. Her leadership in the field was further recognized when she was appointed as a Special Advisor to the global board chair term for 2024 to 2026.

Education has also remained an important part of her professional journey. She holds a Master of Science in Oil and Gas with Energy Management from the University of East London, which supports her broader understanding of global energy markets, operations management, and regulatory frameworks. Her expertise extends beyond geophysics into areas such as QHSE systems, maritime policies and laws, trade compliance, logistics, and operational management within the offshore energy sector.

In addition to her industry work, Nandlal is passionate about sharing knowledge and encouraging the next generation of geoscientists and maritime professionals. She volunteers with organizations such as the Young Professionals division of AAPG, the Geological Society of Trinidad and Tobago, and the UWI and UTT Geosciences programs, where she provides technical lectures and guidance to students entering the field.

As a Women Offshore Ambassador, she hopes to continue advocating for visibility and representation across the maritime and offshore industries. Her career stands as an example of what is possible when technical expertise is combined with perseverance and a commitment to lifelong learning.

For Nandlal, success in maritime careers is built through steady progress and personal integrity.

“Your uniqueness is your competitive advantage. Be strong for yourself but be kind to others. Stay persistent and consistent in your efforts. You might not always be the best but maintaining a steady approach and putting in consistent work will ultimately lead to success.”

Through leadership, mentorship, and global experience, Christy Nandlal continues to contribute to the evolving landscape of offshore energy while helping inspire future professionals who are ready to pursue careers at sea.
