Dr. Anna Weerakoon Karunatilleke has built a career at the intersection of maritime engineering, shipyard operations, and strategic leadership. As a marine consultant, entrepreneur, and educator, she brings both technical expertise and a forward-looking perspective to an industry that continues to evolve.
Based in South Asia in the country of Sri Lanka. Karunatilleke’s journey into maritime engineering began with a strong commitment to technical excellence and professional growth. She holds a Class III Certificate of Competency in Marine Engineering from CINEC Maritime College and continues to expand her expertise through advanced academic study. Her pursuit of leadership and management knowledge led her to complete a Master of Business Administration at the Postgraduate Institute of Management at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, followed by a Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Kelaniya.
Throughout her career, she has gained extensive experience in shipyard operations and maritime engineering environments where precision, coordination, and technical oversight are essential. Her work with Seagulf Consultancy Lanka and CML-MTD Walkers placed her at the center of shipyard development and vessel maintenance projects. In these roles she contributed to dry-docking supervision, vessel inspections, repair coordination, AutoCAD design planning, and quality assurance processes that support the safe and efficient operation of vessels.
Her experience also includes hands-on technical training at Colombo Dockyard Limited, where she worked across multiple operational areas including automation systems, mechanical workshops, inspection departments, calibration processes, and electrical systems. These experiences gave her a comprehensive view of how shipyard operations function from both engineering and management perspectives.
In addition to her technical work, Dr. Karunatilleke has developed strong capabilities in project coordination, technical documentation, and operational planning. Her digital and analytical skills have supported shipyard operations through the use of tools such as AutoCAD, MS Project, and database systems, as well as marketing and digital communications for maritime businesses.
Today, she leads two companies, AWK Industries (Pvt) Ltd and Maritime Vista (Pvt) Ltd, where she focuses on business operations, strategic planning, and operational efficiency. As a marine consultant, she works to introduce modern management practices and lean operational methods that improve productivity and service delivery across maritime organizations.
Alongside her professional work, Dr. Karunatilleke remains deeply committed to education and mentorship. As a Visiting Lecturer at CINEC in Sri Lanka, she shares her knowledge with the next generation of maritime professionals while encouraging students to approach engineering and maritime careers with curiosity, confidence, and a willingness to innovate.
Her involvement in professional organizations such as the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Association of Engineers, and the Sri Lanka Association of Young Scientists reflects her dedication to professional development and knowledge sharing across engineering and technology fields.
As a Women Offshore Ambassador, Dr. Karunatilleke is passionate about encouraging greater visibility for women pursuing careers in maritime engineering and shipyard operations. She believes that representation, mentorship, and strong professional networks play a critical role in helping women build sustainable careers within the industry.
Her advice to women entering maritime reflects the mindset that has guided her own career.
“Do not be afraid to step into spaces where women are underrepresented. Engineering and maritime industries require determination, technical knowledge, and strong leadership, qualities that women possess just as much as anyone else. Stay confident, keep learning, and build strong professional networks that support your growth.”
Through leadership, education, and entrepreneurship, Dr. Anna Weerakoon Karunatilleke continues to contribute to a more innovative and inclusive maritime industry while helping inspire the next generation of engineers and maritime professionals.
