At Women Offshore, we love spotlighting the inspiring stories of our Ambassadors. Women who are not only navigating the maritime industry with strength and purpose but also paving the way for others to follow. Today, we’re excited to introduce you to Katie Brzostek, a second mate sailing with American Roll-On Roll-Off Carrier Group (ARC), whose story is full of passion, resilience, and vision.
Katie is currently a second mate aboard a RORO (Roll-On Roll-Off) vessel with ARC, where she plays a vital role in the world of commercial shipping. A graduate of SUNY Maritime, Katie balanced her studies with time on the sailing team and earned her third mate’s unlimited license. Since then, she’s sailed on various vessel types, but has found her stride—and her passion—in the commercial shipping sector.
When asked about proud moments in her career, Katie doesn’t point to a single event. Instead, she highlights the small wins that come with growth—each time she steps outside her comfort zone, takes on new responsibilities, or learns something new.
Like many women offshore, Katie has had to navigate environments where her capabilities were sometimes underestimated. Her response? Preparation, persistence, and a strong support network.
“I overcame it by staying grounded in my knowledge, showing up prepared, and leaning on my support system—including fellow mariners and mentors who’ve always been a great soundboard for me.”
She also stays motivated by focusing on the bigger picture and maintaining simple routines that support her well-being—even something as grounding as the thought of returning home to her family.
Katie became a Women Offshore Ambassador to give back to the same community that once supported her. She sees the role as one rooted in visibility, mentorship, and advocacy. Even in the early stages of her ambassadorship, Katie’s already making a difference, especially when mentoring cadets on board.
“It’s fun seeing people who are young and hungry to learn. It’s easy to offer tips, encouragement, or just listen. Sometimes, knowing someone else has been in your shoes makes all the difference.”
Katie is excited about the direction the industry is heading. She’s particularly inspired by SHIPS for America and the growing conversation around nuclear shipping, which brings together innovation, sustainability, and national security.
She also sees an opportunity for the industry to invest more in continuing education, making learning more accessible even while mariners are offshore.
“There should be better access to remote learning tools or onboard training modules. It would help mariners stay sharp and prepare for license upgrades or specialized roles.”
When she’s not offshore, Katie enjoys the simple things, like cooking, being outdoors with her dog Monkey, relaxing at home with her fiancé, and right now, planning her wedding, which she describes as a fun project.
Thank you, Katie, for sharing your story and being a role model to so many women pursuing a career offshore. Your passion, leadership, and commitment to lifting others up are what make Women Offshore such a powerful community.
