The Assistant Engineer is responsible for the maintenance, preservation, operation, and readiness of the ship’s propulsion machinery, mechanical and electrical systems, and damage control equipment. The Assistant is also responsible for fueling operations, pollution control, logs and record keeping. Depending on the vessel, the Assistant may act as Chief Engineer or the engineer in charge of a watch in a periodically unmanned engine room. Must be able to join the Inlandboatman’s union within 30 days of employment. Must possess and maintain US Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC) 3rd assistant unlimitied or equivilant with STCW-III/3 endorsement, Valid USCG Medical Certificate, and TWIC.
