Job Purpose:
Performs manual labor work in connection with loading and/or discharge of cargo from and to various vessels.
Job Duties:
- Removes inbound cargo with attention not to damage cargo during the operation.
- Stows cargo in ship or on wharf in a safe and efficient manor without damage.
- Lashes and unlashes shipboard containers by removing/installing rods, cones, lashing wires, ropes, and any and all related equipment for lashing, rigging, and securing.
- Lashes and unlashes blocks, removes shoring, shores cargo to secure cargo for transport or for cargo removal.
- Loads or unloads cargo to and from containers, trailers, pallets, conveyors, slings, cargo boards or any and all such equipment used for cargo.
- Operates various cargo handling equipment.
- Sweeps and cleans ships holds and containers after cargo removal or in preparation for cargo loading.
- Removes or places hatch covers and strong backs, handles mooring lines, hauls and places gangways, and rigs or unrigs ships tackle as directed.
- Lifts and moves palletized and palletized cargo manually or by means of equipment or machinery.
- Reads, marks, and sorts cargo as directed.
- Shovels loose material such as: sand, gravel, coal, chemicals, rock, metals, plastic, etc. into machine hoppers or into vehicles, or containers.
- Drives vehicles in accordance with the requirements of various operations.
- Any and all duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to competently perform job duties described above.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 2 or more years of experience or training in physical work including but not limited to: lifting, standing, and climbing
- Valid state-issued driver’s license
- Transportation Worker Identity Credential (TWIC) required
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving equipment. The employee is occasionally exposed to high precarious places, fumes, or airborne particles, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Work is performed Monday through Saturday. Work is also performed during the day and at night. The employee must have a flexible schedule.
Physical Capabilities Required:
The physical demands described in this section are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of this job.
- The physical ability to safely work on a ship and in a terminal, accessing all areas of a vessel by climbing ladders to access hatches, cranes, equipment, and storage spaces.
- Lift/Carry/Move objects – regularly up to 35 pounds, occasionally up to 75 pounds
- Able to work at heights up to 80 feet above ground
- Bend, Crouch, Crawl, Kneel/Squat
- Reach, Reach above head
- Climb – stairs, ladders, into/out of vehicles, vessel hatches requiring both legs, both arms
- Sufficient balance to safely navigate uneven and wet surfaces while in motion, climb stairs and ladders
- Perform work while standing
- Use hands and fingers to perform fine manipulation
- Work in confined spaces
- Turn/move/pull/push objects using moderate force
- Stand and Walk – uneven surfaces, incline/decline
- Vision sufficient to read instructions and use/manipulate fine equipment, see and navigate near fast-moving equipment and to operate vehicles on busy terminal safely.
- Hearing sufficient to hear and understand spoken instructions and hear approaching/moving equipment in environments with moderate levels of noise.
Longshore laborers must be able and prepared to work long hours (up to 12 hours) and must be prepared to work a rotating schedule between day and night shift.
