Maritime careers can offer unique opportunities, but they can also come with financial considerations that are different from a traditional nine-to-five career.
Rotations, periods away from home, changing income levels, and careers that can span multiple sectors all make financial planning an important part of long-term career management.
In Episode 268 of the Women Offshore Podcast, we speak with Brandon Vecchio, Financial Advisor and Co-Founder of Axios Financial Group, about financial planning and what maritime professionals should consider when building toward their own definition of financial freedom.
Brandon has worked as a financial advisor for nearly seven years and specializes in working with professionals in the maritime and oil and gas industries, along with small business owners.
His connection to maritime began through Captain Glenn Koshak, who lived in Brandon’s hometown in Wisconsin. That relationship introduced Brandon to the industry and gave him an opportunity to better understand the people and careers within it.
Before becoming a financial advisor, Brandon worked as a project manager for a steel fabrication and construction company. That experience shaped his approach to working with clients and reinforced his belief that financial planning should be understandable and practical.
Today, Brandon focuses on helping clients define what financial freedom means to them and then build a plan around that goal.
During the conversation, he discusses why financial planning shouldn’t be something professionals put off until later in their careers. Understanding income, expenses, savings, investments, retirement planning, and long-term goals can help mariners make more informed decisions throughout their working years.
The conversation also addresses the importance of education. Brandon believes clients should understand why they are making a particular financial decision rather than simply being told what to do.
For maritime professionals, that approach can be especially valuable. Careers at sea can look very different from one another, and financial priorities will change depending on where someone is in their career, their family situation, and their long-term goals.
Brandon’s goal is to help clients avoid unnecessary second-guessing and focus their time and resources on the things that matter most to them.
For anyone working in maritime who has questions about building a financial plan, this episode provides a practical starting point for thinking about how today’s career decisions can support tomorrow’s goals.
