Zanele Mthembu has built her career navigating the demands of the oil and chemical tanker industry, where precision, safety, and decision making under pressure are part of daily life. As a Navigation Officer, her work centers on vessel operations, maritime safety, and maintaining stability in environments where every action carries responsibility.

Her time at sea has shaped more than her technical skills. It has strengthened her leadership, resilience, and ability to problem solve in high pressure situations. Through bridge watchkeeping, vetting inspections, GMDSS operations, and emergency response, Zanele has developed a strong operational foundation while learning how to manage both systems and people in complex conditions.

Working in tanker operations requires a steady approach and attention to detail. Zanele understands that safe navigation is not just about following procedures. It requires awareness, communication, and the ability to respond effectively when conditions change. Her commitment to safety and regulatory standards reflects a broader responsibility to the vessel, the crew, and the environment.

Before building her career at sea, Zanele gained early exposure to the industry through an internship with the South African Maritime Safety Authority. That experience provided insight into maritime policy and governance, giving her a broader understanding of how the industry operates both onboard and ashore.

Alongside her work at sea, Zanele is also contributing to the future of maritime innovation. She serves as the South African Community Leader at Innovate Maritime Africa, where she supports efforts to build a more collaborative and forward-looking maritime ecosystem. Through this role, she is involved in initiatives that encourage innovation, connection, and the development of new ideas within the industry, including support for the organization’s venture studio.

In addition to her technical career, Zanele has developed a strong interest in communication and leadership. As a member of Toastmasters International and a mentee with Maritime EmpowerHer, she continues to refine her public speaking and presentation skills. She is working toward becoming a professional speaker, with a focus on sharing her experiences and encouraging others to pursue careers in male dominated industries like maritime.

For Zanele, communication is a key part of leadership. Whether on the bridge or in front of an audience, she believes that confidence and clarity can influence outcomes and create opportunities for others. Her goal is to use her voice to support and empower the next generation of maritime professionals.

As a Women Offshore Ambassador, Zanele is focused on contributing to a more inclusive and visible maritime community. She hopes to share her journey in a way that reflects both the realities and the opportunities within the industry. By combining her operational experience with her passion for leadership development, she aims to create space for more women to see themselves in maritime roles.

Her perspective is grounded in consistency, resilience, and a willingness to grow.

Through her work at sea and her commitment to mentorship, innovation, and communication, Zanele Mthembu is helping shape a future where more women can enter the industry prepared, confident, and supported.
