Esra Konak, a Master Captain and Women Offshore Ambassador, has built her career in one of the most demanding sectors of shipping, oil and chemical tankers. A graduate of Istanbul Technical University in Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering, she combines strong technical expertise with extensive operational experience at sea.

“Working on chemical tankers means operating in highly complex and demanding conditions,” she explains. “You are responsible not only for navigation, but for cargo operations, safety, and environmental protection. Every decision has consequences.”

With more than 15 years of sea-going experience, Esra has commanded vessels across global trade routes, operating in high-risk regions and technically complex environments. Her work has required precision, discipline, and the ability to make critical decisions under pressure.

After years of operational leadership at sea, Esra is now expanding her focus toward shore-based strategy. She is currently pursuing her graduate studies at Texas A&M University, concentrating on maritime business, risk management, and logistics.

“Sea experience gives you a unique perspective,” she says. “To create broader impact, it is essential to understand the business, legal, and strategic dimensions of the industry.”

Her academic focus includes tanker operations, maritime law, risk and insurance, and supply chain systems, with the goal of bridging operational expertise and strategic decision-making.

Esra approaches maritime as a critical pillar of global trade, energy security, and economic stability. Her operational experience includes navigating high-risk regions such as the Gulf of Aden and the Gulf of Guinea, as well as operating during periods of geopolitical tension.

She has also conducted operations in ice conditions without icebreaker support on non-ice-class vessels, managing both vessel safety and temperature-sensitive cargoes under challenging environmental constraints.

“Shipping is the backbone of global trade,” she explains. “But it is also directly connected to geopolitical realities and energy flows. What happens at sea impacts economies on land.”

During the Russia–Ukraine conflict, Esra operated for 63 days under heightened regional uncertainty, gaining firsthand insight into how geopolitical developments affect maritime operations, safety, and decision-making.

These experiences have strengthened her ability to evaluate risk not only operationally, but within a broader strategic and global framework.

Throughout her career, Esra has demonstrated resilience and consistency in high-pressure environments. Even in situations involving personal physical challenges, she remained focused on her responsibilities, ensuring operational continuity and the safety of her crew.

“At sea, leadership means being present, making decisions, and maintaining stability regardless of circumstances,” she says.

Her leadership style is defined by calm decision-making, accountability, and the ability to manage both technical complexity and human factors in demanding conditions.

As one of the few women to reach the rank of Master Captain in Türkiye, Esra brings a clear and grounded perspective on leadership in a traditionally male-dominated field.

“Leadership is not about gender, it is about competence, consistency, and accountability,” she says. “At sea, results speak louder than anything else.”

She encourages women to focus on their strengths, build confidence through experience, and define success on their own terms.

Through her role as a Women Offshore Ambassador, Esra actively contributes to increasing visibility, supporting mentorship, and fostering inclusion within the maritime industry.

“Maritime can be isolating, especially in leadership roles,” she reflects. “Being part of a global community that supports and uplifts women creates real impact.”

She is committed to building stronger connections across offshore operations, maritime business, and global networks, contributing to a more inclusive and forward-looking industry.

Esra encourages future maritime professionals to embrace challenges and remain adaptable in a rapidly evolving industry.

“Every experience adds to your perspective,” she says. “Use it to build something meaningful and to create impact beyond your immediate role.”

Her work reflects a combination of operational excellence, strategic thinking, and a clear commitment to leadership in the global maritime sector.
